Love already did her assignment for our Brownman tribute. Well, the she was the fast writer and of course, no crises for her this week.
Anyway, after hurdling the office crisis, I am now free to write a little piece about this so-called underground-now-mainstream band. Their PR article says it’s been 11 years that they have gone underground, meaning not really sikat, except for some joints in the Metro. We usually catch them play at the UP Fair or at some “underground” gigs too.
Eileen and we even have this long-standing plan to catching them again play at Xaymaca. Maybe next month, or next next month, we still don’t know when. We might even have Vince go with us for this particular gig.
Finally, they now have an album. See how sikat they have become? And too showbiz-y already, having TV guestings and autograph signing sessions. Too bad, we didn’t get to watch their album launch at Megamall this week. Too much to catch up.
And I tell you, the album really rocks! “Steady Lang” is the title of the album, and ironic, you can’t just stand steady when you listen to the album. Hearing it the first time, at around 10 PM at home, Lovella and I were transported to the sunny beaches of Bora and PG. Summer is beckoning, with their stomping music. You can’t just really help but sway, no not sway but gyrate, to their beat.
One fave in the album is “Under the Reggae Moon”. Parang gusto mo manlalaki with that song in the background. “…Under the reggae moon, dadalhin kita doon. Under the reggae moon, magdamag walang sawa”. With something like Little Mermaid’s “Under the Sea” tune, you can’t just resist dancing. And emoting na meron ka ngang kaulayaw.
Of course, the perennial fave is “Maling Akala”, their carrier single and resurrected from E-heads, with of course, the reggae twist. What makes it so sikat? This song can even be heard in pop stations, and not only limited to NU107. Another revival is “Binibini” – yes, that “Binibini sa aking pagtulog, ikaw ang panaginip ko”. Of course, with a sexier tone.
Also worth mentioning are their originals (Frontman Dino Concepcion wrote some of these songs way back 1999) are Lintik (“Lintik na pag-ibig, parang kidlat, puso kong tahimik na naghihintay, bigla mong ginulat”); Ikaw Lang Ang Aking Mahal; Gusto Mo Pa and Salarin. These guys are hopeless romantics really, and very patriotic too – all their songs are tagalog, very OPM.
My verdict? Isn’t it obvious already? Better buy your copy, and for only P280, it’s more than enough for you to have an eternal summer. Sounds fun eh?
